Display structures of building blocks
  • You must type the numeral '1' after an
element that is single, e.g. ethanol
    C2 H6 O1
  • You can type the formula without or
    with spaces, e.g. C2H6O1 or C2 H6 O1
  • You cannot type spaces between an
    element and its number
  • Numbers do not need to be integers
    e.g. C2.2 H1.9 O.45
  • Elements can be typed in lowercase
  • The order of elements does not matter
  • The results are rounded to two digits
    after the point.

Using the Calculator

The calculator recognizes all elements symbols, plus deuterium (D) and tritium (T). In the simplest case just type an empirical formula (keeping in mind the rules listed under the calculator) and the result will be displayed. For example in order to calculate the mass of heavy water type D2O1.
People working with peptides or nucleotides might find the possibility of assembling the structure with ready to use building blocks useful. For example if one needs to know the mass of the protected dipeptide BocCysAsp(OH)OMe depicted below:

Amino acid residues are marked with a blue rectangle. They can be located on a panel that is displayed when one clicks on the "Amino Acids" label. The Boc protecting group is marked with an orange rectangle and other substituents are marked with a green one. These blocks can be chosen from appropriate panels, too. When the components are being chosen their empirical formula is calculated along with their molar mass.
